It Takes More Than Just a Please

Jimmy woke up one morning and said to himself." This sure does look like a nice day to go for a walk to the pond in the field just behind my house". Even though it was summer break, he thought it would be okay to do something by himself without friends, other than just sit and play video games - he had already beaten all the games at least once already.

So he got dressed, did his face and teeth and went down stairs to see his mom. It was already 10:00 am. When he asked his mom if he could go out to play she said that he could but he would have to wait until after lunch.

When he left the house, it was a nice warm day. The sun was shining brightly and a cool breeze was blowing big puffy white clouds across the sky. Jimmy thought it was so nice that he went for a walk to play with his new ball down by the pond where he would see his friend Joe (who happened to be a frog).

When he got down to the pond, there were mosquitoes everywhere. Since it was such a nice sunny day, he thought nothing of the mosquitoes knowing that his friend Joe would eat some of them. It would not be that bad; he thought to himself and started to play.

Throwing his big yellow ball up into the air and it coming down, up and down and up and down until, all of a sudden, splash! The big yellow ball fell into the pond. Jimmy felt sad because he had just lost his new ball.

Joe saw that Jimmy was sad, so he said that he would go down to the bottom of the pond and search for his friend’s ball. But he said Jimmy would have to give him something in return, like money.

Jimmy felt around in his jean pocket and pulled out three bright and shinny one-dollar coins. Not wanting to give them all away, he gave only one coin to Joe. Joe didn’t think it was enough, so he said he wanted some more. Jimmy said, "Okay then, one more coin" and gave Joe one more coin. However, Joe still wanted more. Therefore, Jimmy said, "Okay, I will give you just one more dollar." Jimmy gave Joe his last coin.

Joe said that, that would have to do for now and dove down into the very dark waters of the pond. He searched and searched, turning over rocks and more at the bottom of the pond until he found Jimmy’s new yellow smiley face ball. He then returned to the surface to give it back to Jimmy who, of course, thanked Joe for retrieving his brand new ball for him from the dark depths of the pond.

After that, Jimmy went home and told his mom what had happened to him that day. She was a little bit surprised because Jimmy had none of his allowance left and asked him to explain all over again.

By the time he was done, it was time for Jimmy to have supper, then wash up and go to bed.
